The City of London has standards for the collection of garbage, recycling materials and yard waste to ensure the right materials enter the proper collection stream, and to help ensure worker safety.

The checkbox below will help to determine if your garbage was in compliance with the City’s waste collection by-law. Garbage that does not comply will not be collected. If no problem can be identified, please leave garbage at the curb and staff will return to inspect your garbage for removal or will advise you of why it was not collected. In most cases we are able to return within 24 hours, not including weekends.

The following is a list of requirements for garbage to be collected. Please review the list and check the box below to confirm that the garbage is in compliance with the by-law.

  • At curb by 7am on your collection day and accessible to crews (e.g., visible, not blocked, not on top of snow bank)
  • Garbage at other homes on the same side of the street as your home has already been collected.
  • Complied with the 3 container limit, and any additional garbage containers had a City of London garbage tag
  • In bags or cans that did not weigh more than 20kg per container of garbage
  • Garbage was contained in bags orcans that were not larger than 125 litres and not smaller than 30 litres
  • Garbage container lids were removable and not tied/bungeed down
  • Garbage did not contain items that will not be collected, such as: scrap metal, propane tanks, electronics, appliances, lumber, tires, construction & renovation materials, or fluorescent light bulbs/tubes
  • No sharp materials (e.g., broken glass, sharp metal) that were not safely contained. Sharp items must be contained in a sealed cardboard box and marked ‘glass’ or ‘sharp’
  • No loose carpet. Please cut carpet to 1m lengths and tie in bundles not weighing more than 20 kilograms
  • Did not contain needles. Disposal options.
  • Was not stickered by the collector to identify the specific issue

If collection crews have already tried to collect your garbage and it was not accessible, and you require a truck to return for collection you will be notified to confirm your request and informed of a service fee for the return visit.

  • Was accessible to collection crews – it was not blocked by vehicles, construction, snow, etc.
  • Ready for collection by 7am on your collection day
  • Regarding of non-collectable waste (mattresses, scrap metal, construction & renovation material, appliances, electronics, tires, etc.)

  • At curb by 7am on your collection day and accessible to crews (e.g., visible, not blocked, not on top of snow bank)
  • Recycling at other homes on the same side of the street as your home was already collected.
  • Contained in Blue Boxes or see-through bags that did not weigh more than 20 kilograms per container
  • Correctly sorted into paper and containers
  • Contained only recyclable materials accepted in London’s program
  • Any cardboard was correctly prepared for recycling pickup: flattened and placed in a Blue Box, or flattened, and tied in bundles not greater than 75 cm x 75 cm x 20 cm
  • Was not stickered by the collector to identify a specific issue

  • Contained in Bue Carts
  • Correctly sorted, using two or more carts.
  • Contained only recyclable materials accepted in London’s program
  • Free of non-collectable waste (mattresses, scrap metal, construction & renovation material, appliances, electronics, tires, etc.)

The checkbox below will help to determine if your yard waste was in compliance with the City’s waste by-law. Yard waste that does not comply will not be collected. If no problem can be identified, please leave it at the curb and staff will return to inspect your yard waste for removal or will advise you of why it was not collected. In most cases we are able to return within 48 hours, not including weekends.

The following is a list of requirements for yard waste to be collected. Please review the list and check the box below to confirm that the yard waste is in compliance with the by-law.

  • At curb by 7am on Monday of your collection week
  • Placed in acceptable containers: paper yard waste bag, reusable container, certified compostable bag
  • Did not use plastic bags
  • Yard waste at other homes on the same side of the street as your home has already been collected.
  • Each container of yard waste did not weigh more than 20 kilogram
  • Contained in bags or cans that were not larger than 125 litres and not smaller than 30 litres
  • Container lids were removable and not tied/bungeed down
  • Any brush (branches, twigs) was properly prepared for collection. Brush was not tied in bundles with string or rope, each bundle did not weigh more than 20 kilograms, tree limbs were not more than 10 centimetres in diameter and 1 metre in length
  • Did not contain grass clippings, dirt rocks, sod, or tree stumps
