The City of London has standards for the collection of garbage, recycling, and yard waste in order to ensure materials enter the proper collection stream, help keep our neighbourhoods tidy, and ensure worker safety.

The following is a list of requirements for garbage to be collected, please review and check the box below to confirm that your garbage is in compliance with the waste collection by-law (WM-12):

  • At curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day and accessible to crews (e.g., visible, on level ground, not on top of snow bank)
  • Garbage at other homes on the same side of the street as your home has already been collected
  • Items that can fit into a Container must be in one: use plastic garbage bags or plastic/metal garbage cans
  • There is a 3-container limit per registered residential unit or any additional Containers had a City of London Garbage Tag visible for collectors
  • Contained in bags or cans that were not larger than 125 litres, not smaller than 30 litres, and did not weigh more than 20 kilograms (44 pounds)
  • Garbage can lids must not be attached, hinged, or bungeed down. Contents of can must not extend above the rim of can
  • Some items are not collected with curbside garbage such as appliances, electronics, fluorescent light bulbs/tubes, pressurized tanks, renovation materials, tires, scrap metal (e.g., bikes, metal furniture), and yard waste
  • Broken glass, glass panes, or other sharp items must be contained inside a cardboard box, sealed with tape, and labelled “caution sharp” for collectors
  • Large household items such as furniture, mattresses, sofa beds (remove mattress and tie springs down), and carpet (cut into 1 metre lengths & bundle) can be placed at the curb. Maximum 2 cubic metres per collection
  • Two-piece toilets are separated into two pieces, all water is removed and the toilet is not broken or cracked

If you cannot identify a problem, please leave garbage at the curb and collection staff will return to inspect your set out. In most cases we are able to return within ~24 hours, not including weekends.  After a weekend please ensure garbage is set to the curb by 7 a.m. on the following week

The following is a list of requirements for recycling to be collected, please review and check the box below to confirm that your recycling is in compliance with the waste collection by-law (WM-12):

  • At curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day and accessible to crews (e.g., visible, on level ground, not on top of snow bank)
  • Recycling at other homes on the same side of the street as your home has already been collected
  • Recycling must be contained in Blue Boxes or see-through bags. Maximum weight of Blue Boxes or bags is 18 kilograms (40 pounds)
  • Materials are correctly sorted into separate Blue Boxes or bags for paper and containers
  • Blue Boxes or bags must only contain recyclable materials accepted in London’s program
  • Cardboard must be correctly prepared: flattened and placed in Blue Box/bag or flattened and tied in bundles not greater than 75 cm x 75 cm x 20 cm

If you cannot identify a problem, please leave recycling at the curb and collection staff will return to inspect your set out. In most cases we are able to return within ~24 hours, not including weekends. After a weekend please ensure recycling is set to the curb by 7 a.m. on Monday of following week (excluding holidays).

The following is a list of requirements for yard waste to be collected, please review and check the box below to confirm that your yard waste is in compliance with the by-law:

  • At curb by 7 a.m. the first day of your collection week and accessible to crews
  • Placed in acceptable containers: paper yard waste bag, reusable container, certified compostable bag
  • Yard waste at other homes on the same side of the street as your home has already been collected
  • Each container of yard waste did not weigh more than 20 kilograms (44 pounds)
  • Contained in bags or cans that were not larger than 125 litres and not smaller than 30 litres
  • Container lids were removable and not tied/bungeed down
  • Any brush (branches, twigs) was properly prepared for collection: tied in bundles with string or rope; maximum weight of each bundle is 20 kilograms;  tree limbs were not greater than 10 centimetres in diameter and 1 metre in length
  • Did not contain grass clippings, dirt, rocks, sod, pet waste, or tree stumps

If you cannot identify a problem, please leave yard waste at the curb and staff will try to return to inspect your set out for removal or provide more information.

The checkbox below will help to confirm your yard waste was in full compliance with the City’s waste collection by-law. Yard waste that does not comply will not be collected.

As of October 1, 2023 residents will need to schedule in advance a pick-up for large furniture and bulky items.

Collection is for accepted large items over 1 metre wide and 1.5 metres tall, generally requiring 2 or more people to safely place at the curb.

Requests must be submitted at least 5 business days in advance.

Collection will occur on your next scheduled garbage collection day.

There is a 4-item limit per household each garbage collection day.

Please fill out the description box below listing up to four items for collection and your desired collection date and please prepare your items correctly for collection as follows:

  • Unless specified below, do not break down or disassemble items; materials should be set out to the curb in one piece.
  • Remove glass parts or inserts from large furniture.
  • All mirrors, glass, or sharp items must be sealed separately in cardboard and labeled ‘Caution - sharps’ for collectors.
  • Separate tank from bowl in two-piece toilets. Cracked or broken toilets will not be collected and should be dropped off to be recycled at an EnviroDepot.
  • Remove mattresses from sofa beds and tie springs down.
  • Items that are soiled or contaminated with bed bugs must be wrapped and sealed in plastic. Plastic mattress covers may be purchased from hardware stores or self-storage locations.
  • Set item(s) next to your garbage set out at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day but no earlier than 6 p.m. the night before.
  • Learn more about what is considered large furniture or bulky items at london.ca/whatgoeswhere, the following items are not accepted:
    • Appliances & electronics
    • Renovation materials
    • Vehicle parts, batteries, tires
    • Mostly metal items (e.g., bikes, metal furniture, scrap, etc.)
    • Loose or improperly prepared items

Items not in compliance will not be collected. Residents would be required to remove any non-compliant items from the curb, correct the issue, and reschedule collection for another collection day at least 5 business days in advance.

Medium items up to 1 metre wide and 1.5 metres tall, generally requiring one person to safely place at the curb may be set-out on your collection day and do not require booking. 2 cubic metre limit (e.g., 2 kitchen chairs or 1 medium shelf).
